Naval Oceanography Quick Facts:

• Founded in 1830 by naval officer Lt. Matthew Maury
• 2900 Personnel (1600 active duty and reserve military officers/enlisted and 1300 civil service and contractors)
• Personnel stationed at over 60 locations and deployed to every ocean around the world.
• Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command is also the Oceanographer, Hydrographer, and Navigator of the Navy and Naval Deputy to NOAA
• Naval Oceanography has 13 subordinate commands that work in various scientific fields from the ocean floor to the stars
