A native of Hendrum, MN, Chief Petty Officer Nelson graduated from RTC Great Lakes, IL January 2nd, 2009.

Afloat, Chief Petty Officer Nelson completed his first tour aboard Beachmaster Unit 2 (BMU2) from 2009-2014. During his time there, he completed two full deployments and additionally flew out to relieve one of his shipmates for half of the duration of another deployment. All deployments were to the Mediterranean and his first deployment included humanitarian efforts in Haiti after the earthquakes in early 2010. His second tour was for three years in Coastal Riverine Squadron 3 (CRS3) in San Diego, CA from 2014-2017, where he completed two more deployments to 5th fleet area of responsibility. He then served in his 3rd sea command at Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron 4 (MSRON4) where he completed two deployments to 5th fleet area of responsibility.

Ashore, Chief Petty Officer Nelson served at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam in Hawaii from 2017- 2020, where he was the Leading Petty Officer for his division at Port Operations. He is now currently serving his second shore command at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C.

Chief Petty Officer Nelson’s personal awards include six Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals as well as multiple unit and service awards.
