Chief Petty Officer Angelica Brown, a native of San Antonio, Texas, is one of the sailors ensuring the U.S. Navy maintains freedom from the ocean to the stars at Navy Meteorology and Oceanography Command (METOC).

Brown currently serves as a yeoman at METOC, headquartered at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.

Brown, who graduated from Southwest High School in 2014, joined the Navy 10 years ago.

“I joined the Navy to be a role model for my family as the first one to join the military,” said Brown.

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in San Antonio.

“Growing up in my hometown, I watched a lot of people work hard to earn their living, and that stuck with me and motivated me to continue to be the best I can be,” said Brown.

According to Navy officials, sailors and civilians working throughout Naval Oceanography collect, measure, and analyze the elements of the physical environment (land, sea, air, space). They synthesize a vast array of oceanographic and meteorological data to produce forecasts and warnings in support of safety of flight and navigation.

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

Brown serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.

“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”

Brown has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

“I am most proud of my recent accomplishment of advancing to chief petty officer,” said Brown. “I am grateful to those who supported and mentored me to get here. I look forward to mentoring and offering the same support to bring others up with me.”

Brown can take pride in serving America through military service.

“Serving in the Navy is profoundly meaningful to me,” said Brown. “It provides an opportunity for personal growth while allowing me to protect the ones I love.”

Brown is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.

“I want to thank my husband, Christian Brown, and children, Ariana and Kenneth, for their unwavering love and support throughout my journey,” added Brown. “Their encouragement strengthens me as I strive for excellence.

“I also want to thank my second family, Kenneth and Melissa Brown, in Gallatin, Tennessee.”
