The James M. Gilliss Building, U.S. Naval Observatory
The James M. Gilliss Building is the headquarters of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, DC. It is named in honor of LT James M. Gilliss, USN (1811-1865) who initiated the action that led to the creation of the USNO by act of Congress in 1842. The building, designed by the renowned American architect Richard Morris Hunt in 1887, was completed in 1893.
