U.S. National Ice Center Deploys Buoy in Data-Sparse’d Arctic

15AUG2022, SUITLAND, MD—U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography (Naval Oceanography) representation from U.S. National Ice Center (USNIC) were part of personnel aboard the USCGC Healy (WAGB-20) to successfully deploy Sofar Ocean spotter-buoys during its patrol to the North Pole, this Summer. 

Currently, Chief Warrant Officer (CWO2) Mike Latin, Operations Officer at USNIC is deployed onboard the Healy—and will oversee execution of the buoys’ deployment. 

The first buoy was successfully deployed in early August, and the final buoy will deploy later in the month.

PHILIPPINES —— Dr. John Edward Murray Brown from Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command visited the Philippine Navy (PN) headquarters (HQ) and other commands reinforcing the U.S-Philippine partnership and efforts to support a free and open Indo-Pacific—following the 31st U.S.-Philippine Hydrographic Survey Working Group (HSWG), June 20-30, 2022.

HONOLULU (July 14, 2022) - U.S. Navy Airman Trinity Berg, assigned to U.S. Navy Fleet Survey Team, unscrews a compartment on the IVER3-580 Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) to add lead weights allowing the AUV to dive in salt water. Aerographer’s Mates from U.S. Navy Fleet Survey Team utilize an IVER3-580 Autonomous Underwater Vehicle to scan the ocean floor for hazards. This is part of a Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Response (HADR) scenario to safely reopen a port following a typhoon. Unmanned and remotely operated vessels extend the capability of interconnected manned platform sensors to enhance the warfighting capacity of multinational joint task forces. Twenty-six nations, 38 ships, four submarines, more than 170 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 29 to Aug. 4 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. STENNIS SPACE CENTER, Miss.-----Rear Admiral (Ret) Luigi Sinapi, Director International Hydrography Organization and Mr. Sankil Lee, Counselor for Oceans and Fisheries, Embassy of the Republic of Korea visit Naval Oceanography for command overview and engage Navy hydrographic survey capabilities at Stennis Space Center.

Sinapi and Lee signed the Naval Oceanography at Stennis guest book that spans back over 30-years.
