Stronger Indo-Pacific: Australian Geo-Spatial Intelligence Visits Naval Oceanography
August 24, 2022
— Naval Oceanography hosted representatives from the Australian Geospatial-Intelligence Organisation (AGO) for an in-depth tour of Naval Oceanography’s global-reaching, environmental-information capabilities, Aug. 12, 2022. AGO’s visit to Naval Oceanography is in alignment with creation of the enhanced trilateral security partnership called “AUKUS”—referencing Australia, United Kingdom, and United States—focused on strengthening ability to support mutual security and defense interests in the Indo-Pacific region through information exchange. Recently, the U.S. Navy Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Mike Gilday stated, “Australia is a great friend and our alliance is an anchor of peace and stability.” Considering the current Era of Great Power Competition, the Indo-Pacific is a contentious and contested region, where strong western allied-partnerships can be a solution. ...

U.S. National Ice Center Deploys Buoy in Data-Sparse’d Arctic
August 16, 2022
— U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography (Naval Oceanography) representation from U.S. National Ice Center (USNIC) were part of personnel aboard the USCGC Healy (WAGB-20) to successfully deploy Sofar Ocean spotter-buoys during its patrol to the North Pole, this Summer. Currently, Chief Warrant Officer (CWO2) Mike Latin, Operations Officer at USNIC is deployed onboard the Healy—and will oversee execution of the buoys’ deployment. The first buoy was successfully deployed in early August, and the final buoy will deploy later in the month. "USNIC's role in the Healy's Arctic Patrol is an example of the 'Advantage at Sea' maritime strategy the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Marine Corps are working to achieve,” said Latin. “We leverage capabilities of one another to accomplish goals like weather and oceanographic sensing in a remote area like the Arctic….[t]his would be a much more difficult without the Healy’s icebreaking capability and professionalism of its crew.” ...

Into the Storm, Under the Ocean
June 27, 2022
— The U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) offers many summer internships and programs for midshipmen to take part in each year. One of those internship opportunities is a program called Training and Research in Oceanic and Atmospheric Processes in Tropical Cyclones (TROPIC), an internship program offered to rising first class (senior) and second class (junior) midshipmen during the third block of their summer training. The program, created by Navy Capt. Beth Sanabia, a permanent military professor in the oceanography department at USNA, began in 2011. During the months of July and August, Sanabia and her TROPIC team work directly with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, also known as the Hurricane Hunters, from Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, to improve hurricane forecast accuracy by understanding what is happening under the storm during tropical disturbances in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The TROPIC team augments the Hurricane Hunters’ atmospheric measurements by collecting ocean data in and around the storm environment...
